Exploring the Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum
After our delightful trip to the Gilmore Car Museum, we were eager to continue our journey through the history of travel, this time focusing on the fascinating world of aviation. The Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum in Portage, MI, promised an engaging mix of historical aircraft, interactive exhibits, and hands-on science activities.
Upon arrival, we were impressed by the modern and welcoming exterior of the Flight Innovation Center. The ticketing process was smooth, with friendly staff guiding us through the various options available. We opted for the all-access pass, which included entry to both the Flight Innovation Center and the East Campus. With our tickets in hand, we were ready to explore.
The Main Exhibit Hall

Stepping into the main exhibit hall of the Flight Innovation Center was like entering a time capsule of aviation history. The sheer size and variety of aircraft on display were breathtaking. From World War II fighters to modern jets, the hall was filled with meticulously preserved planes, each with its own unique story.

Iconic Fighters
One of the first aircraft to catch our eye was a legendary fighter jet known for its variable-sweep wings and pivotal role in the U.S. Navy. This aircraft was a marvel of engineering, and standing next to it, we could almost feel the adrenaline of the pilots who once flew it in high-stakes missions.
Robust Bombers
Nearby, a robust fighter-bomber from World War II stood proudly. Renowned for its durability and firepower, this aircraft played a significant role during the war. The exhibit included personal stories from pilots and detailed technical specifications, giving us a deeper appreciation for the aircraft's significance.

Moving from the world of fighter planes to the cosmos, we entered the Space Exploration Gallery. This section of the museum was dedicated to humanity's quest to explore the final frontier.
Apollo Mission Artifacts
We were particularly fascinated by the artifacts from the Apollo missions. Seeing a real Moon rock and a replica of the Lunar Module brought the achievements of the space program to life. Interactive displays explained the science behind space travel and the challenges faced by astronauts, making complex concepts accessible and engaging.

Although we didn't have our children with us, we couldn't help but notice the KidZone. This area was filled with engaging activities designed to spark an interest in science and engineering among young visitors.

There's also a East Campus, home to the museum's more extensive aircraft collection. This area focuses on the historical aspects of aviation, featuring planes from different eras and conflicts.
Restoration Hangar
One of the unique aspects of the Air Zoo is its on-site Restoration Hangar, where visitors can witness aircraft restoration in progress. Observe skilled volunteers meticulously restoring vintage aircraft to their former glory.

With so much to see and do, it's easy to spend an entire day at the Air Zoo. Plan to arrive early and give yourself plenty of time to explore all the exhibits and participate in the interactive activities.

The Air Zoo offers numerous photo opportunities, from posing with vintage aircraft to capturing the excitement of a virtual reality experience. Don’t forget to bring your camera or smartphone to document your visit.
Take Advantage of the Amenities:
The on-site café offers a variety of snacks and meals, perfect for refueling during your visit. We enjoyed a light lunch there and found the food to be both tasty and reasonably priced. The gift shop features a wide range of aviation-themed merchandise, from books and models to apparel and souvenirs. We picked up a few keepsakes to remember our visit.
