As we step onto the deck of the Hy-Line Cruises ferry, the anticipation of the day ahead fills the air. The rhythmic hum of the engines and the sound of seagulls overhead set the mood for our maritime adventure. The cruise offers stunning views of the open sea, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination.
Our ferry docks in the charming town of Oak Bluffs, a place steeped in history. The colorful Victorian cottages, known as the Gingerbread Houses, immediately catch our eye, transporting us to a bygone era. A quick stroll through the streets reveals the town's rich heritage, with landmarks like the Flying Horses Carousel and the Union Chapel.
Pro Tip:
For those on a tight schedule like ours, renting a car is a game-changer. Martha’s Vineyard is more extensive than it seems, and having the freedom to explore every nook and cranny requires wheels. We opted for a car. Bike rentals are great options as well if you have more time to spend on the island.
With the wind in our hair and the sun shining above, we hit the island's roads in our sleek drop-top Mini Cooper. The feeling of cruising through picturesque landscapes with the top down is an experience in itself, turning heads and eliciting smiles from fellow travelers.
As our stomachs begin to rumble, we make our way to Lucky Hank’s Restaurant and Cafe. Nestled in a cozy corner, this establishment not only offers a warm and inviting atmosphere but also serves up mouthwatering dishes that tantalize our taste buds. A perfect pitstop for refueling before our next adventure.
Sated and ready for more, we resume our journey, soaking in the island's natural beauty. Our next destination, Aquinnah Cliffs (also known as Gay Head Cliffs), promises breathtaking views and a closer connection with Martha’s Vineyard's unique geology.

Fun Fact:
Situated on the western edge of the island, The Gay Head Cliffs, known as "Moshup's Bluff" by the Wampanoag people, hold a rich Native American history. For centuries, the Wampanoag utilized this stunning clay cliff on Martha's Vineyard for practical purposes, extracting ochre pigment for ceremonial body painting and rock art. "Moshup," a benevolent deity in Wampanoag mythology, was believed to inhabit the cliffs. The name "Gay Head" itself is derived from the vibrant hues caused by the oxidized clay. Today, the Gay Head Cliffs continue to echo the cultural significance of this sacred space, serving as a testament to the enduring heritage of the Wampanoag people.
Arriving at the cliffs, we are greeted by a sweeping panorama of the Atlantic Ocean. The contrast of the vibrant cliffs against the deep blue sea creates a postcard-worthy view. The grounds are perfect for a leisurely stroll, allowing us to absorb the serenity of the surroundings. There's also souvenir shops, ice cream shops, and a general store on the premises as well.
Our adventure takes us to the iconic Gay Head Lighthouse. Climbing the stairs to the top, we are rewarded with a 360-degree view of the island. The glass dome amplifies the sunlight, making it feel like we're standing in the heart of a beacon. It gets hot up there, but the view is worth every bead of sweat. We
